Curriculum
Not all children learn the same way or at the same pace, so at Vaalia Schoolhouse we use an eclectic approach to formal learning materials. We will never be tied to any one curriculum provider, and no school district will mandate what we must use to teach your child.
All students work daily on reading, writing, and math skills, but personal needs may require one child to use a math program by one publisher, while another student uses a different program. The same may hold true with language skills practice. Younger children may use very little formal curriculum, and might find their lessons developed on the spot as the need arises. A variety of materials, readily available, allows teacher and student to work together to develop an effective learning strategy for each child.
Curriculum providers we have used in the past include Abeka, Horizons, Rod and Staff, Pathway readers, Miquon, Beautiful Feet Books, and My Father's World, to name a few. Music and art instruction comes from a variety of sources. Throughout the day, quality literature enriches students' learning, and trips to the public library supplement the hundreds of books we have here on site.
