About Our School

Who?

Families with children in Kindergarten - 5th Grade
Limited space may be available for 4th and 5th grade students. In this case, priority will be given to those who have younger siblings at Vaalia Schoolhouse, as well as to those who are struggling with basic academics.
What?

Individualized teaching for elementary grade students

Like an old-fashioned schoolhouse, mastery of basic skills is the goal. All ages are present together and are able to learn from one another.

When?

Monday Thursday,  9:00 - 2:00

Students may be dropped off at 8:45 and must be picked up by 2:00 unless other arrangements have been     agreed upon. We may be able to accommodate different scheduling needs. Just ask.

Where?

North Valley area of Grants Pass, Oregon

Meeting in a home environment allows children to relax and learn many practical life skills in addition to core academics.

Why?

Because you deserve options!

There has been a quiet transformation happening in our country in recent years. The rise of home schooling, the growth of charter schools, and an abundance of online classes have given parents and students more educational choices than ever. Many are realizing that a traditional classroom environment, even with the best of teachers, may not be an ideal place for their children. Vaalia Schoolhouse offers a home atmosphere and educational approach quite different from a typical American classroom.

"I've never let my schooling interfere with my education."
-- Mark Twain

What is different about Vaalia?

1. Vaalia Schoolhouse is founded on a Biblical worldview.

We enjoy telling Bible stories not just for their literary merit, but because we believe that God loves us and wants     to have a relationship with each of us, no matter how young or old. Our days together begin with age-appropriate     Bible study and prayer. See our doctrinal statement

2. We are able to give your child personal attention.

Some children are advanced for their age, some need more time to mature, and some need remedial help. Our small size allows us to customize each student's curriculum to provide for success and growth.

3. We offer a variety of experiences.

Academic skills are just the beginning. Our desire is to grow capable, compassionate, well-rounded people. Outdoor play, food preparation, handcrafts, gardening, music, household chores, public speaking, service projects, games, budgeting, and decision making are all part of school life here.

4. Wiggles and movement are encouraged.

Movement is healthy for the body and mind. While we recognize that there is a time to practice self-control, we also know that children are meant to move. Sometimes that means doing math in a rocking chair or practicing spelling while you dance. It also means we spend plenty of time outdoors, in all kinds of weather.

5. Our methods are both old-fashioned and based on current research.      The transformation of Finland's school system in recent years inspired the name of our school, yet we also embrace the ideas of Charlotte Mason, an early 20th century English woman. Blending the old and the new gives us the best of both worlds. For more on Charlotte Mason's methods, look          .

6. Community outings and field trips are a regular occurrence.

Regular trips are made to the public library, as well as to other "real life" destinations. Field trips and outdoor excursions add variety to our schedule.

7. Family involvement is expected.

Families of enrolled students are expected to be actively involved with their child's education. There are many ways to support your student at home and at school. Please carefully read our                             page.

8. No electronics are used by students.

We believe that children's time is better spent being actively engaged with the world around them.
